WiFi is already built into most of today's notebooks, eliminating the need for a separate wireless card. Even
better, there are notebook models available with built-in wireless broadband access, which is delivered through
partnerships with mobile phone operators using GPRS/3G.
In a WLAN, all the computers broadcast their information to one another using radio signals. This can make
networking extremely easy and flexible, especially when you have computers throughout your office. A WLAN can work
with notebooks, handhelds, printers, and other devices. Some ways that you can use a WLAN include:
- Set up a wireless network in your office
Employees can move from their desk to a conference room to a coworker's office, and have access to all
their work.
- Stay connected while traveling
Each day, more and more public locations are "WiFi hotspots." When you're on the road, if you have embedded
WiFi in your notebook, it's easy to find a location where you can be connected.
- Use a phone with your notebook
WLAN allows you to use a Voice Over IP (VoIP) phone with your notebook. Numerous
companies provide this service, including Skype and Sipgate.
